Portland Rock n' Roll Half Marathon 2012 (Part 3) - Race Day!

So I don't have a huge race report, but I do have some things to say, and of course I have my results and some pictures, so please keep reading!

This was the inaugural Portland R n R Half Marathon so I had never ran the course before and not being super familiar with Portland I didn't really know what to expect. Yes, my first half marathon was the Run Like Hell in Portland in 2010 and that was hilly, so I should have expected hills here, but honestly I didn't expect there to be as many as there was! And that said, I didn't train adequately for the hills.

They took me by surprise.

It was as though we would turn a corner and there would be a hill. Then we would have a short downhill, turn another corner, and boom! Another hill.

As we ran through the neighborhoods along Hawthorne and Burnside people had lots of signs, and plenty of which said things like "you're halfway up the hill..." etc. Halfway? Are you kidding me? Yes, that thought entered my head multiple times.

But I survived! And for once I tried to really enjoy the race and my surroundings, taking in the crowds, the signs, the sights. This was definitely not something I had done before in prior races. I feel like that is because I am so often in my own head that it is hard to really stop and enjoy the experience.

I think this race was well executed, there were plenty of porta potties along the way, plenty of water and gatorade stations, and the volunteers did a great job making sure everything was well stocked and ready for us when we came through their stations. It was a pleasure of a run and while I did not re-register for next year, that doesn't mean that I won't again a little later on.
It was raining for nearly the entire 13.1 miles. Which I LOVED. I would much rather run in the rain than run in the heat. I know a lot of people disliked the rain, but I was not one of them.

My parents were about a half mile out from the finish line when I was coming in and it was so encouraging and refreshing to see them there cheering for me. It definitely gave me the extra OOMPFH to get through.

Once I crossed the finish line I was quickly handed my medal, some water, and a fruit cup with peaches. I then proceeded to get my picture taken, to get a bottle of chocolate milk, a box of yummy food courtesy of PDX RnR, and then to get my space blanket. It was the first time I ever got one of those and it was quite nice. Plus it made me feel all fancy. Sorry, I obviously don't get out much!

After I got out of the finishers area I stepped right out to see Rebekah, Chris, and their pup Bandit waiting for me. It was so nice to have friends at the finish! They only live about 10 blocks from the park so they had walked down (in the rain) to meet me! :)

My first goal was to get a 2:50 for time. My PR prior was 2:51:51 (from my first half) and I really thought I could beat it. Unfortunately with all of the hills, that goal slowly (or maybe quickly, passed away).

After that goal I really just decided that I wanted to do better than my other half  (which was my second half) which was 3:20. Thankfully I was able to crush that time!

My results: (According to the Official Race Website)

Overall place: 9577 out of 11017 (meaning I beat 1440 people overall while 9576 beat me)
Division place: 816 out of 895 (meaning I beat 79 people in my division while 815 beat me)
Gender place: 6501 out of 7703 (meaning I beat 1202 other women while 6500 beat me... ah well)

My 5k time was 40:31
My 10k time was 1:24:52
My 10 mile time was 2:19:37

And my finish time was 3:04:14 (which means I had a pace of 14:04)

Portland Rock n' Roll Half Marathon 2012 (Part 2) - My Playlist!

Because I LOVE music it means I LOVE (and despise) putting together playlists for races. I love it because I enjoy finding a good mix of music, and I despise it because I have over 7500 songs on my itunes and it makes it EXTREMELY difficult to choose!

That being said, this playlist has definitely been a labor of love, particularly because it took me a few days to whittle down and finalize. Then I kept thinking of songs that I liked and knew I had but knew I hadn't added to my list yet!

Anywho, I like to approximate that I go through roughly 3-4 songs per mile, depending on song length and depending on mile pace OF COURSE. For this race I approximated it to 4 songs per mile with 1 mile having 5 shorter songs.

Portland Rock n' Roll Half Marathon 2012 (Part 1) - EXPO!

Thought I would share with you my exciting trip to the Expo for the Inaugural Portland Rock n' Roll Half Marathon that is this Sunday!

I live a little less than an hour south of Portland, so I am not staying in Portland for the race but will drive up with my mom in the morning on Sunday.

I like doing that a LOT better because I LOVE sleeping in my own bed!

The Expo was a lot of fun.

Being unemployed and on a limited budget I wasn't able to buy things that I wanted to get, like super awesome shirts, headbands, hats, etc.

However, there were tons of free samples and I still got my super awesome swag bag with my Brooks technical race t-shirt :)

So I can't complain!

Anyway, here are some pictures I took to share! :)

I really liked this little countdown... It did make me a little more nervous! It's soooo close!

Two time Olympian runner, Kara Goucher, was giving an interview while I was there! How exciting! She is definitely a running celebrity and a shining example for women runners and women athletes! If I could even have half of her talent I would be doing well!

The front of my race shirt. It is actually REALLY cute and I LOVE the color. Very exciting for a race shirt. Something I will actually want to wear!

My race bib. I'm in the 19th corral and there are 23 corrals. Yes, I am a slow runner.

And here is what I will be running for on Sunday... the BEAUTIFUL race bling! Can't wait to earn mine!!

Half Marathon Training Run 3.39

Today's run went ok. Legs were feeling kind of heavy. Not sure if that is a good sign considering I should be tapering this week in regards to training. Making me consider my final 2 training runs and if I should do them, or maybe make them training walks (or even wogs)... Any input out there?

Half Marathon Training Run 3.38

I do not enjoy running in the heat! I need to get up and be out to run tomorrow morning at 8am. That way it won't be as hot and that way I can get in the habit of running earlier, especially since my half is on Sunday and is in the morning. I suppose I did run in the heat of the day... Not my smartest moment, but I did it! :)

Half Marathon Training Run 3.35

First run in Grove in a LONG time! Decided to do a run we used to do in high school up this road called Hillside Drive. I was reminded why I always despised this run back in my cross country and track days... The hills are steep! Not super steep but there is a decent incline and it goes on for almost the entire road. And I decided to do an out and back route, so 2 miles out and then 2 miles back home. The back home wasn't as bad because there was quite a bit more downhill, but I definitely felt the downhill in my lower back, so I'm sure that wasn't great. My first mile was 13:34, second was 12:24, third was 13:16, and fourth was 12:22. I suppose that's decent for the type of run it was, and as much as it sucked doing it, I miss longer hilly runs like this, since there aren't a lot of hills where I live in Salem. All in all a good run and looking forward to my 3 miler here in Grove tomorrow :)

Half Marathon Training Run 3.34

This jog went well. Considering my legs were super sore and stiff from my first Spartan class yesterday! I am glad I went out. Hadn't really been feeling like it as my stomach was somewhat crampy and just not feeling well. But I figured I'm into my final 2 weeks of training for my half and it's just 12 days away, I better keep at it! Started around 13:30 pace, which is slower than I want to run my half marathon in, but I had negative splits for both mile 2 and mile 3, which has been happening a lot as my legs ease into the run and I get warmed up. Hoping for a good run tomorrow and lots of stretching tonight!

Half Marathon Training Run 3.33

Just a quick little run to the post office and then taking the long "loop" route back home. Thinking about going to spin class in an hour so I didn't want to waste too much energy with a longer run. Figure I will save the distance for the weekend :)

Half Marathon Training Run 3.32

It went ok. Legs and back were a little sore from running yesterday and then trying out two new workouts, but aside from that it went well. Hopefully that tomorrow I can do 5 miles, but we will see. Then this weekend I have my LSR for 12 miles.

Half Marathon Training Run 3.31

Did my first mile in 12:15, second in 11:45 (and this mile included the long hill at Bush Park), third in 10:54 and fourth in 12:59 - not too bad overall, but I did get a side cramp again a little after mile 3 and I am thinking maybe it's just because I have been pushing it more lately, but I am really trying to amp up through this week so next week and the week leading up to my half can be all about tapering. Hadn't ran since Thursday's low mileage day, so this was much needed!

Todays' Stats = 4.00 miles in 47:57

Half Marathon Training Run 3.30

Ok so I wasn't feeling so great today. Thought I could try to go out and run anyway, like a good training runner would... Well, needless to say I didn't get too far. Hoping that things go better this weekend on my long run. And I'm glad I was able to get in some miles, no matter how short.

Half Marathon Training Run 3.29

Ok, so I was doing AWESOME. Until a little after the 3 mile mark when I got a massive side ache and could not even extend my stomach out or even jog upright. I ended up walking the last portion because I really wanted to do at least 3 miles, a goal which I met, and I wanted to know the distance from my house, to the park, one loop around the park, and then back home. But here is what was awesome, my third mile I ran I did in 10:39! I haven't ran a mile that fast in a LONG time. My first mile was 11:54, my second was 12:30 (this mile had an icky hill in it, which I ran up all the way without walking), and then my third was 10:39. I was overjoyed when I saw that on my Garmin. What a great day to run and what a great run!

Todays' stats = 3.65 miles in 46:00
- Mile 1 = 11:54
- Mile 2 = 12:30
- Mile 3 = 10:39
- 0.65 =  10:57 (walked)

Half Marathon Training Run 3.28

Tried to pick up the pace a bit. Wanted to do this run faster than my desired half marathon pace, which is 12:35 per mile. Thinking if I can do my shorter runs at this pace, then my remaining two long runs at about a minute slower than my desired race pace, I should be good at keeping on track. Had to walk a little between 1.35 miles and 1.50 miles, so it may have been even faster if I hadn't done that.

Todays' stats = 2.00 miles in 23:00

Tues - Scheduled = 2 / Done = 2.10 miles in 25:00
Wed - Scheduled = 2 / Done = 2.00 miles in 24:00
Thurs - Scheduled = 2 / Done = 2.05 miles in 25:00
Fri - Scheduled = 0 / Done = 0
Sat - Scheduled = 10 / Done = 10.00 miles in 2:29:00
Sun - Scheduled = 2 / Done = 0

Weekly Total = 18.65 miles

Half Marathons past

I have done 2 half marathons. I have done the Run Like Hell half marathon in Portland, Oregon and the Eugene Half Marathon in Eugene, Oregon.

I did the RLH in October of 2010.

I did the EHM in May of 2011.

As I get closer to my next half marathon, the Rock n' Roll Portland Half Marathon, I have been thinking about paces and PRs.

As much as I would LOVE to PR in this upcoming half, I don't know if I will be able to from the pacing that I have been doing while training this time around.

Here are my stats from the past halfs.

Run Like Hell Half Marathon
- I finished in 2:51:51 which means I had an average pace of 13:07/mile

Eugene Half Marathon
- I finished in 3:20:04 which means I had an average pace of 15:17/mile

I trained adequately for the RLH, while I barely trained for EHM.

I have been training hard for this upcoming half, but my pace has been hovering around 12:30/mile on short runs and my long run yesterday was an average of 14:51/mile.

As much as I would LOVE to PR, I think my main goal for this half is to be under 3:00:00. Man I feel slow!
